What is hot stamping?
Hot stamping, also known as foil stamping or hot foil stamping, is a printing technique used to apply metallic or pigmented foil to a solid surface through a heated die. It’s commonly used to add shiny or metallic finishes to various materials such as paper, cardboard, leather, plastic, and fabric.
Here’s how hot stamping typically works:
- Preparation: The design or artwork to be stamped is prepared either digitally or by creating a physical die.
- Die creation: A metal die is created, usually made of brass or magnesium, which carries the inverse of the desired design. The die is heated.
- Foil selection: A roll of foil, often metallic or pigmented, is placed between the die and the material to be stamped. The foil comes in various colors and finishes.
- Stamping process: The heated die is pressed onto the foil, causing it to transfer from the backing onto the surface of the material. The heat and pressure activate the adhesive on the underside of the foil, bonding it to the substrate.
- Cooling and removal: After a brief moment, the die is removed, leaving behind the stamped design on the material. The foil adheres only to the areas where pressure from the die was applied.
Hot stamping is commonly used for embellishing items such as book covers, packaging, greeting cards, labels, leather goods, and promotional items. It’s favored for its ability to create eye-catching designs with a metallic sheen or other decorative effects, adding value and visual appeal to the finished product.
Hot stamping consumables

Hot stamping consumables typically include the following components:
- Foil: Foil is the primary consumable used in hot stamping. It comes in rolls and is available in various colors, finishes (such as metallic, matte, glossy), and patterns (such as holographic). The foil is made of a thin layer of pigment or metallic material coated with a heat-activated adhesive.
- Die: The die is a metal stamping tool that carries the inverse of the desired design. It’s usually made of brass or magnesium and is heated during the stamping process. Dies can be custom-made for specific designs or purchased as standard designs for common applications.
- Hot stamping silicone rollers, also known as silicone rubber rollers or silicone impression rollers, are an integral component in the hot stamping process. These rollers are used to apply pressure to the substrate and the foil during the stamping process, ensuring proper transfer of the foil onto the material’s surface.
